About the Cumberland County Cooperative Fair Association
The Cumberland County Fair is one of New Jersey’s oldest and most cherished traditions, with roots that date back more than 300 years. Historical records indicate that the fair was first held in the village of Greenwich around 1695, when the Cumberland County Agricultural Society was formed. The Fair served as a gathering place where local farmers, craftsmen, and residents came together to exhibit livestock, agricultural products, and handmade goods. The fair was eventually outlawed in 1765 for reasons lost to history. By 1823, the fair had returned and began moving between various locations throughout Cumberland County, continuing its mission of celebrating the region’s strong agricultural heritage and sense of community.
The modern Cumberland County Fair is organized by the Non-profit Cumberland County Cooperative Fair Association and has been held at the Cumberland County Fairgrounds on Carmel Road in Millville since the late 1960s. Built on land acquired by Cumberland County in 1967, the fairgrounds became a permanent home for an event that had previously been hosted in multiple locations. Today, the fair continues to honor its agricultural roots while offering family-friendly entertainment, including livestock exhibits, 4-H activities, craft displays, horse events, parades, and the popular demolition derby. Through the dedication of the Cooperative Fair Association and countless volunteers, the Cumberland County Fair remains a beloved summer tradition that preserves the county’s history while bringing together generations of residents and visitors alike.
