Demolition derbies were first held at various fairs, race tracks, and speedways by independent promoters in the 1950s. There are unconfirmed reports of events occurring as far back as the 1930s utilizing the abundant supply of worn-out Ford Model Ts.
The Cumberland County Fair has featured Demolition Derbies for many years.
It is an exciting event and the drivers, both male and female, have large followings.
The participants spend a lot of money building their cars and sometimes their only reward is a round of applause.
There is one Demolition Derby scheduled for this year's fair.
The Derby will be held on Saturday July 8th only.
